Teachers are required to audition and select their own students for AMIS Middle School Honor Choir Festivals. No audition sound files are submitted to AMIS for middle school honor choirs. This should be a formal audition procedure designed to demonstrate that the singer can hold their part and learn the repertoire in a timely manner. The audition includes two vocalises and a musical excerpt.

• It is recommended that the selection process include yourself and at least one other adjudicator.
• Vocalise 1 & 2 are to be sung individually, either live or recorded.
• For the musical excerpt, directors may choose a challenging passage from the current year’s honor choir repertoire, or use the excerpt provided. The purpose of the excerpt is to assess whether a student can hold their part independently against others. Each student is to perform the repertoire excerpt at the same time as the other vocal parts, either within a group audition format (one on a part), or individually with teacher singing/playing other parts.
• Directors should allow students time to learn their part from the excerpt, providing help as needed.
• In your assessment, please consider tone, pitch accuracy, part independence, musicality, and phrasing. An adjudicator’s listening guide is included.
• Sound files to support all auditions are provided.
• Singers who struggle to match pitch should not be considered for participation in an honor choir festival.

Audition Deadline: 16 October 2017

Three Honor Choirs. The 2018 International Honor Choir Festival will include a Women’s Choir, Men’s Choir, and Mixed Choir. Students may audition for a specific choir, or for membership in one of two choirs. Singers auditioning for two choirs increase their likelihood of a successful audition. While the audition listening committee will endeavor not to assign multiple repertoires to one auditioning school, this may be impossible to avoid in some circumstances.

The auditions for this year are Set 4. Excerpts are from standard repertoire, identified by name and composer. Students are encouraged to listen to recordings of the works to aid audition preparation.  There are 2 vocalises for each voice part, worth 10 points each.  The aria is worth 20 points.

A maximum of six auditions can be uploaded for each voice part: Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass.

The audition process is both blind and anonymous.
The listening committee is unaware aware of either the identity or the source of a particular sound file, and is therefore unable to provide feedback on individual performances.

The materials presented here are for BOTH the European and Asian Middle School Band Auditions.  Use only audition materials marked Set 4.  Previous materials may be inaccurate.

Each school is invited to submit up to six candidates for each instrument.

Eligibility: Top Players in Grades 7-8. In exceptional circumstances auditions from 6th grade students will be considered; see “Participation by 6th Graders” in the audition instructions for further information. This set, set 2, has been revised slightly for this year. You must use the current, revised materials, which are to be downloaded from the AMIS website.

Teachers…

  • please work with your students, to help ensure that the audition process is a genuine learning experience. Etudes 1 +2 are designed to allow all instruments to rehearse together.
  • please also include your students who play minority instruments – low brass, low woodwind, and double reed instruments – to audition even if their proficiency level is less than that of your flute, clarinet or trumpet players. We aim to form a band of between 60 and 80 players and need these instruments in order to create a reasonably balanced ensemble.
  • SmartMusic Files of the MS band audition materials can be found with the audition materials.

The audition listening process is both blind and anonymous. Adjudicators are unaware of either the identity or the source of a particular sound file, and are therefore unable to provide feedback on a specific performance.
