The materials presented here are for BOTH the European and Asian Middle School Band Auditions. Use only audition materials marked Set 4. Previous materials may be inaccurate.
Each school is invited to submit up to six candidates for each instrument.
Eligibility: Top Players in Grades 7-8. In exceptional circumstances auditions from 6th grade students will be considered; see “Participation by 6th Graders” in the audition instructions for further information. This set, set 2, has been revised slightly for this year. You must use the current, revised materials, which are to be downloaded from the AMIS website.
- please work with your students, to help ensure that the audition process is a genuine learning experience. Etudes 1 +2 are designed to allow all instruments to rehearse together.
- please also include your students who play minority instruments – low brass, low woodwind, and double reed instruments – to audition even if their proficiency level is less than that of your flute, clarinet or trumpet players. We aim to form a band of between 60 and 80 players and need these instruments in order to create a reasonably balanced ensemble.
- SmartMusic Files of the MS band audition materials can be found with the audition materials.
The audition listening process is both blind and anonymous. Adjudicators are unaware of either the identity or the source of a particular sound file, and are therefore unable to provide feedback on a specific performance.
Who Can Audition?
Applicants must submit their auditions through a music teacher from their school, and must be active members of their school band if one is included in the school program. Any exceptions to the this policy must have approval from the Executive Director.
Seventh and eighth grade members of their school bands are eligible to audition for this festival. Alternates as well as full members will be chosen for each instrumental group. Alternates would be expected to practice the music and would then be ready for a full band place should one of the participants be unable to participate.
Students in grade 6 who are of exceptional ability may also audition, however directors are cautioned against submitting auditions from sixth graders who are not truly well beyond their years in terms of playing ability and rehearsal maturity.
- Schools in Asia are invited to audition for the Asian Middle School Honor Band.
- Schools in Europe are invited to audition for the European Middle School Honor Band.
- Schools from the rest of the world may choose the band for which they wish to audition.
Helpful Guidelines for Recording Your Auditions
The Room: Choose a room far from street noise that is not too live. An echo camouflages articulation and nuance. Record auditions in a room with acoustics as dry as possible. Above all, do not add artificial reverberation. Please ensure there are no background noises from fans, air conditioners, computers, etc, that may detract from the instrument’s sound.
Recording Equipment: Set the level during a trial recording. Do not change the level during the recording. If your recorder adjusts volume automatically while the student is playing, use an alternative machine.
Metronome: Lower – pitched metronomes are easier to record. The metronome tone should be the same throughout the audition. Please switch off any multi pitch function (bell, click) so that each click sounds the same. Listen to make sure that the metronome is clearly audible. Follow the instructions on the audition music concerning starting and stopping the metronome. Metronome markings must be followed.
Submitting Your Auditions
Auditions for this festival will be submitted digitally by uploading files to the AMIS website. It is a good idea to test the uploading system well in advance. In the unlikely event that your particular internet situation prevents you from submitting your files via the website, you must allow sufficient time to record your auditions and send them through the post (details below).
Format: Only sound files in mp3 format should be submitted. In most cases, other formats will not upload. If you are having uploading problems, this is the first thing for you to troubleshoot.
Submit Separate Files: Record each item for each student as a separate mp3 file: 1 file for each scale, 1 file for the excerpt. File Names (Saving Files): Each file of the audition should be clearly labelled as Scale 1, Scale 2, Scale 3, and Excerpt, followed by the student’s name.
Example: Scale1_Joe_Bloggs.mp3 Use letters and numbers only—no accents or symbols.
Listen to upload: The upload page provides you with an opportunity to listen to each file. This is an essential step in your submission process. Pay attention to the quality of the finished recording for audio level and the balance with the metronome. Check to make sure there aren’t long periods of silence at any point in the sound file. Each scale/excerpt must be recorded in one complete take. Splicing, cutting, or pasting will result in immediate disqualification.
Screen Your Auditions: If the standard of the audition is obviously not sufficient for an advanced band, do not send the recording.
Accessing the Online Data Base: In order to upload your entries, you will need your school code and password. Your entries will be uploaded on the online registration part of the AMIS website, using the step – by – step instructions. Please note that the school audition code system is no longer in use.
Confirm: The upload page has a feature that allows you to listen to your recordings in playback. This is an essential step in the process; directors should review each audition after uploading.
Deadline: Submissions must be uploaded by 16 October 2017. Late auditions will not be considered.
